History Loves Company
Welcome, friends. If you’ve stumbled upon this page by accident, keep scrolling! If there’s one thing we love at Lamy’s, it’s the history that we inherited with this building. If you’ve got an hour or two, we’d love to share a cocktail and tell you all we know. If you’ve only got a few minutes, you’re in the right spot.
This magnificent, 50,000 square foot building isn’t just a bunch of bricks piled high, upgraded to be a kick-ass hang-out spot…though, it certainly is that. In reality, it’s all that and so much more. It’s rich in history, family, and over 100 years of legacy. Pull up a seat at the same time each week. After all, history loves company.
Company Loves the French
If you’re wondering where the name “Lamy” comes from, wonder no more. This interesting surname is of French origin and is from the Old French given name or nickname “Amis”, meaning friend, from the Latin “amicus”, a derivative or “amare”, to love.
The Lamy’s were french tailors that migrated to America in search of a better life like so many did and still do. Earnest Lamy and Sons started a business in early 1866 and that business sat in the lot directly west of what we now know as the Osage Gun and Pawn.
That original building burnt to the ground and the business was moved inside the large building you now know as “J. A. Lamy’s” at 108 W. Pacific in 1893. It began with a single tailor and so many years later, Sedalia is rich in the family history this building provides and enveloped in a community grounded in its past.
Oh, if only these walls could talk, the secrets they may tell. We have to settle for the stories that have been passed down from generation to generation–and in our humble opinion, you’re in for the greatest treat.
Until next time…
The French Love Champagne and Toast
We can’t help but wonder and think about what Mr. Earnest Lamy would think of his building today. Just as it’s boggling to wrap your mind around traveling by horse and carriage as he did, we imagine he could never wrap his mind around the place that it’s become. But, just the same, we owe this all to a French tailor who had a vision.
The Lavender French 75 is our nod to Mr. Lamy. Lavender syrup, a splash of lemon, topped off with what else? Of course, the bubbles. We don’t serve the French Champagne, but the Prosecco is solid and we never run out. It’s delightful in the heat of summer and the perfect cocktail sipped on our No. 5 Bistro patio.
If bubbles aren’t your jam, we get it. Grab a slice of French Toast and have it your way at our infamous brunch at No. 5 Bistro and Bar. We can’t help but suggest you have it “loaded” with strawberries, candied bacon or fried pork belly, and more powdered sugar and syrup than should really be legal.
No matter what you choose to do at Lamy’s, we know the history of this place will keep you coming back. It can’t be erased and it can’t be changed and in this world today, isn’t it nice knowing that some things never change? See you at Lamy’s where History Loves Company.
