We’ve chatted about this before, but word on the street is that there’s a Trivia Tuesday question coming up that may need you to be refreshed in our denim history.
Back in the 1930s and 1940s, the Staffords, your family’s vintage adventurers, decided it was time for a good old-fashioned road trip. Picture them piling into a car, with no GPS, just a trusty map, and starting on a journey that felt longer than an endless queue at the DMV.
Now, Grandpa Stafford, being the Indiana Jones of his time, stumbles upon something unheard of in their Midwest world—the legendary “LEVI’S.” These were jeans so cool, they hadn’t even made it past Colorado, and their main fans were cowboys, not fashionistas.
In 1946, Grandpa Stafford’s handshake was like a contract written in gold dust, sealing a deal to start making Levi’s at Lamy’s place right here in Sedalia, MO. Fast forward to 1948, and Levi Strauss & Co. swoops in like a denim superhero, taking charge of everything Lamy had going on—making jeans, getting them to the people, and selling them like hotcakes at a county fair.
So, in a nutshell, our little town of Sedalia became a denim legend thanks to Grandpa Stafford’s epic adventure and Levi’s journey from the Wild West to the heartland.
Fast forward to the fabulous ’50s, and there’s this cool cat named James Dean. Maybe you’ve heard of him? He struts onto the scene rocking a pair of Levi’s, and it’s like the world collectively loses its marbles. Suddenly, these jeans aren’t just for cowboys; they’re the hottest ticket in town, and everyone’s gotta score themselves a pair. Levi’s is the undisputed champ of denim, reigning supreme until the groovy year of 1980 when another star steps into the spotlight. Who’s the mystery guest? That’s a refresher course for another time. Stay tuned. But, in the meantime, come see us at Lamys where all of the denim history started. Bring your kids. Bring your wives. After all, history loves company.
