Have you ever stopped to think about the history of holidays? Have you considered that Christmas wasn’t always celebrated? It may come as a shock to you that the holiday we celebrate as Christmas is not much older than the building we reside in! The creation of American Christmas was actually a response to social and often personal needs that arose at a certain point in our history.

Particularly, the American Christmas was derived during a time of Civil War as well as the development of industrialization and urbanization. It served as a brief time each year to unite a divided country. But, even as late as the early 19th century, thousands of Americans, (both those who attended church and those who didn’t) Southern and Northern, didn’t differentiate Christmas as anything other than a normal day.

As immigrants started to migrate and the swirl of customs and community divided, America, as we know it, started to take shape. With this, came an adopted celebration of a Christmas that ministered to many needs, celebrated many faiths, and united the country each year for a moment in time.
