History Loves Martinis
Ah, the martini. It’s a classic cocktail that’s been enjoyed by the likes of James Bond, Frank Sinatra, and countless other iconic figures throughout history. But where did this beloved drink come from, and how did it become so popular? Let’s take a trip back in time and explore the fascinating history of the martini.
Believe it or not, the origins of the martini are a bit murky. Some say it was first concocted in San Francisco during the Gold Rush, while others credit it to New York City’s Knickerbocker Hotel. Still, others claim that it was invented in the town of Martinez, California, hence the name “martini.” Whatever the true origin, it’s clear that the martini quickly became a favorite among cocktail enthusiasts.
In its earliest form, the martini was made with gin, vermouth, and a dash of orange bitters. Over time, however, the recipe evolved, with some opting for vodka instead of gin, and others adding different flavorings and garnishes. And of course, there’s the age-old debate about whether a martini should be “shaken, not stirred.”
Despite its many variations, the martini remains a beloved classic to this day. And at No. 5 Bistro and Bar, we’re proud to offer our own take on this timeless cocktail. We’ve debuted a fan favorite, Cantaloupe Martini on our current seasonal menu and we’ve got to tell you, people have asked us to serve it to them by the pitcher. We don’t, however. We’re not animals!
