History Loves Pressers
The history of the electric iron dates back to the 1880s, but like most modern inventions, its roots can go back to ancient history. Circa 400 B.C. the Greeks used heated round bars and used it to produce pleats on their robes. The Romans used irons more similar to the style we know today.
The use of the iron was held by Pressers inside the Lamy walls. Prior to the use of the electric iron, it took multiple irons to get the job done. One in use and heating up behind it. The Lamy Pressers were typically strong men and women, as this iron’s weight was no laughing matter. Today, we have one of our irons on display as you walk up the ramp into the No. 5 Bistro and Bar. We warn you, though, this thing is HEAVY!
Pressers Love Cheese
Ok, we may have made that up. But, the truth is, pressing was a hard job and it definitely worked up the appetites. If only these men and women could know that over 100 years later, their workspace would be serving up the best food in the county! While we rotate menus often both in No. 5 and Ox Horn Market, one thing that remains a staple is the cheeses!
Enjoy creamy brie on our No. 5 Monte Cristo, or perhaps you fancy the shredded cheddar jack on our Turkey Bacon Club. Or, if you’re like us, you live for the GOAT (greatest of all time): the goat cheese served in our Greek Bowl and on our Build Your Own Toasts. No matter your cheese preference, we’ve got you taken care of.
Cheese Loves Boards
char·cu·te·rie/ˌSHärˈko͞odərē/…we know. It’s a hard word to say. Charcuterie comes from the French and was a method used to preserve meat before the advent of refrigeration. Nowadays, we serve these delectable meats and cheeses on beautiful boards and call it art. No.5 Bistro has an appetizer board ready for you and all your friends. We only serve the freshest ingredients according to the season, so make sure you order it often, as it is in constant change.
If you’ve joined the art of charcuterie–either in amateur status or a master, know that we’ve got the perfect boards for you! Head into OxHorn Market and shop our boards. From solid wood to marble inlay, there’s truly a board for everyone. Bring your friends and make a day of it. After all, History Loves Company.
