History Loves the Midwest

The sewing industry is a unique one and I recommend that if given the opportunity to chat with someone whose family history is tied to it, you take it. One not-so-secret secret is that sewing machines follow cheap labor. It’s an intense job and prior to machines being what they are now, a large part of the job belonged to only men.

It’s true. In the early 1900s, the cutting rooms belonged to the men. And not just any man would do! He had to be tall (think 6 ft or taller) and strong. The third floor of our very building is where you’d find these fellas hard at work, leaning over a table, cutting denim with nothing but a blade and their own strength.

Down below, on the second floor is where the ladies could be found sewing. Prior to denim making its way to us, the garment districts were mostly found in larger cities on the coasts: New York, Philly, Boston, etc. When word eventually made its way out that the labor was far cheaper in the mid-west, the business moved this way.

Still to this day, the machines follow the cheaper labor. We’ve gone from having it on the coasts to the mid-west to Mexico, and now currently–China. In 1998 when Lamy’s closed shop, 250 sewing machines and pieces of equipment were sold to a shop in Mexico!

Mid West loves Beef

It’s not a secret to anyone who visits that the Midwest boasts some good eats. We’re rich in farmland and agriculture and with that comes the best beef, raised by the greatest farmers–along with chefs raised upright in the knowledge on how to cook it. That is certainly true for our head chef at Lamy’s.

Whether you choose the chef’s nightly choice of Buckeye Acres Certified Angus, our 100% all-beef patty on the infamous No. 5 burgers, or our 10 oz. hand-cut prime strip steak, no choice is the wrong choice. We may not know all the things in this part of the world, but damn it if we don’t know beef.

Beef loves Beverages

Does anything go better with a burger than a cold beer? The answer is no. Lucky for you, we’ve got multiple options on tap, as well as classic domestic and foreign flavors bottled up and sitting on ice. Join us for a cold one on our hot patio and make it even better with $2 domestic bottles during our infamous Happy Hour.

Not a beer fan? We totally don’t get it..but we’ve got options. Probably even better than cold beer is our Craft Cocktails poured by a few of the best bartenders in the midwest. From our Strawberry Thyme Collins, the Bourbon Bramble to crowd favorite “Orange is the New Blackberry,” all we know is that no matter your choice, it tastes better with friends because history loves company.
