History Loves Time
We thought it may be fun to walk you through a timeline of our history in this beloved building. After all, 120+ years is worth a reflection.
1866
The business was founded by E. Lamy & Sons.
1893
The business building was erected and moved into its current home at 108 W. Pacific Street in Sedalia, Missouri. It also underwent a name change to JA Lamy Manufacturing Co.
1912
E.M. Stafford, Sr. bought the business from J.A. Lamy. Always a manufacturer of work apparel, Lamy’s was a typical contractor for the first half of the twentieth century doing work for Sears Roebuck, J.C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, the U.S. military among others. Shortly after World War II, E.M. Stafford, Jr., struck a deal on a handshake with Walter Haas, Sr., President of a regional apparel brand popular in the western United States only called Levi’s.
1948
Levi Strauss & Co. had contracted for 100% of Lamy’s production to make Levi’s. For the next fifty years, Lamy’s produced exclusively Levi’s products primarily men’s red tab, zipper fly jeans. At Lamy’s peak production the company employed 450 people and produced 60,000 pairs of jeans per week.
1998
The last jeans produced in the facility were manufactured and shipped in December 1998. Most of the sewing machines and equipment were sold and picked up by a business in Mexico.
1998-2017
It’s hard to believe, but our beautiful building sat vacant and empty for almost 20 years.
2017-2020
We spent 3 years planning, designing, envisioning, and remodeling our beloved space. We brought in all the experts and most of the design process was done by our very own Scott Benbrook, along with local designer, Zarah Melville.
2020
Due to the Covid-9 pandemic, work reached a screeching halt right when finishing touches were needing to be made. In June of 2020, just a few months after our original planned date, we opened our doors to the public!
2021
Reid Swearingen launched The Partner’s Desk podcast. Recorded inside Josey Records on the first floor of Lamy’s, Reid sits down with local legends such as retired NFL player–Tim Barnes, former Mizzou Basketball Coach–Kim Anderson, Assistant Athletic Director of Mizzou–Brad Loos and so many more! You can catch up on our podcasts on your favorite podcast streaming device.
2022
We are a completely full 50,000 square foot building! With a restaurant, record store, and retail boutique filling our first floor, many private businesses leasing our second floor, and incredible tenants living on the third floor, this space has turned into more than we ever thought it could be.
If you haven’t stopped by, please do. We are truly a one-stop-shop to fill all your needs and desires. Don’t come alone, though, we recommend a friend or two. After all, History Loves Company.
