Life at Lamys: A Peek Inside Kempf’s Country Market

Welcoming Kempf’s Country Market to the Lamys Family

We’re thrilled to introduce our newest addition to the Lamy’s Building—Kempf’s Country Market, owned and operated by Lyn and Wendy Henderson. This dynamic duo brings not only a passion for quality meat but also a deep-rooted commitment to community and family values. We’re thrilled to share more of their story and what they’re bringing to downtown Sedalia.

Meet the Hendersons

Lyn and Wendy Henderson are the proud parents of two children: Haleigh, 27, who serves as their retail manager, and Eli, 21, who currently resides in Florida. Lyn’s extensive background in information technology, specializing in warehousing and distribution, perfectly complements Wendy’s dedication as a stay-at-home mom. Their life together has been an adventure, having lived in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Florida before settling back in Arkansas in 2021.

Their entrepreneurial spirit shone through when they started an escape room business in Florida. Although the venture shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, their drive to own a business never wavered. In June 2022, they found Kempf’s Custom Butchering through a broker, finalizing the acquisition in January 2023. With most of the original staff staying on and the addition of new team members, including their long-time office manager, Peter, the business is thriving.

A Rich History of Quality and Craftsmanship

This year, Kempf’s Custom Butchering celebrates its 37th anniversary. Founded in 1987 and moved to its current location in 2004, the business has built a reputation for exceptional quality. In a typical week, they process 40 beef and 40 hogs, with the occasional sheep, goat, or bison. During peak seasons, like the modern gun deer season, they focus exclusively on deer and wild game, processing around 2,300 deer last year.

Their retail store offers a wide range of products, from fresh and frozen cuts of locally raised beef, pork, bison, and lamb, to unique items like shrimp, chicken, and frog legs. They also stock Amish-made jarred goods, local jams, jellies, honey, bulk chocolates, raw milk, eggs, cheese, and a fantastic selection of snack sticks, summer sausage, and bratwursts.

Bringing Convenience to Downtown Sedalia

The decision to open a location in downtown Sedalia was driven by a desire to provide a more convenient shopping experience. Lyn and Wendy recognized the challenges of their current location, including the sometimes poor road conditions and the distance from town. The new space in the Lamy’s Building offers three times the shopping area, ample parking, and proximity to their customers.

This move allows them to introduce even more products, including bulk baking items, a larger selection of bulk candies and nuts, and expanded general grocery items. They’re excited to offer the community a place to easily grab the freshest and highest-quality meat products without the drive.

Perks and Challenges of Downtown Life

Being downtown means being at the heart of Sedalia’s busy community. Lyn and Wendy love the convenience of being close to everything—whether it’s grabbing a quick bite, picking up a gift, or just enjoying the local scene. However, they acknowledge some challenges, like not having space for a large freezer to allow for meat pickups at the new location and the lower automobile traffic compared to highways. But they’re hopeful their presence will encourage more businesses to join and revitalize downtown Sedalia. We’re hopeful for that, too!

Favorite Downtown Spots

While Kempf’s Country Market is their pride and joy, the Hendersons have a soft spot for No. 5 Bistro & Bar. As pasta lovers with several food allergies, they appreciate the delicious gluten-free options. They also enjoy a good challenge at RAKS Escape Room, having experienced their first VR “Escape” there.

Community and Quality

Lyn, a devoted Arkansas Razorback fan (though we try our best not to hold it against him), might be spotted around town proudly wearing his Razorback gear. His passion for quality extends beyond sports to every aspect of their business. By supporting Kempf’s, you’re also supporting local farmers and the community.

The Hendersons are eager to serve Sedalia, offering a superior meat shopping experience right in the heart of downtown. They look forward to making new friends and becoming a beloved fixture in the community.

Kempf’s Country Market plans on being open 9 AM – 6 PM Monday through Friday, and 9 AM – 4 PM on Saturdays. Their grand opening is set for June 22nd!

Help us give the biggest and warmest welcome to Kempfs Country Market and to Lyn and Wendy! Welcome to the Lamy’s family! Where History Loves Company.
