Founding APS Solutions: Investing in People  

President and CEO Al Simon’s journey in the industrial staffing industry has been nothing short of remarkable. His dedication and hard work began on the ground floor, where he gained a deep understanding of the industry’s intricacies. This experience proved invaluable as he transitioned through sales and professional services, honing his expertise. But, Al’s true leadership potential came to light when he acquired the staffing division from another local company. This wasn’t just an acquisition; it was an opportunity. He poured his passion and hard work into nurturing this division, transforming it into the thriving APS Solutions we know today. 

The Power of Collaboration: The APS Leadership Team 

At APS Solutions, a collaborative vision fuels success. The leadership team boasts a diverse range of backgrounds and expertise, creating a powerful organization that drives results. Al is ably supported by Jenn Simon, Executive Assistant, who ensures smooth daily operations and provides invaluable support. Chris Cooley, COO, brings 17 years of recruiting and sales expertise to the table, ensuring top talent acquisition and strategic business development. Rounding out the team are Ryan Potts, CLO, who focuses on fostering a safe legal and compliant business Jayme Noble, Infrastructure and Operations Director, who oversees the critical backbone of the day-to-day operations and lastly CFO, Mandy Root is the financial steward of APS Solutions playing a crucial role in ensuring the financial stability and long-term success of APS Solutions. This collaborative approach ensures that every decision benefits from a well-rounded perspective, leading to a stronger and more successful company. 

The Silver Lining 

The story of APS Solutions is one of resilience and determination. In the face of unprecedented challenges, during the isolating months of the COVID-19 pandemic and a contentious 2020 election year, the company took its first steps in no place other than the Simon family’s dining room. Al, with his larger-than-life personality and New York spirit, wasn’t one to be deterred. His motto, “no risk it, no biscuit” perfectly embodied his approach as he envisioned APS Solutions blossoming right here in Sedalia. 

Despite the difficulties, there was a silver lining. The pandemic highlighted the essential nature of the industrial staffing industry, the very market APS Solutions was niche too. This, combined with a dedicated team effort, propelled the company forward. “Growth, remarkably, came quickly” as Al Simon stated.  

A Unique Connection to Place 

Choosing Lamy’s for their expansion was influenced by practical needs and a sentimental connection to the building reminiscent of New York architecture, which Al loves. Their move was facilitated by a longstanding friendship with John and Lori Swearingen, the owners of Lamy’s, emphasizing a shared vision for community development. The space was not only ideal for fostering APS’s growing operations but also resonated with Al on a personal level. He even has a favorite parking spot – near the back of the building by the dumpsters. It might seem unconventional, but for him, it’s a down-to-earth reminder of his New York upbringing and a little reminder of where he came from and the hard work it took to get here.

Cultivating a Family Atmosphere

Al finds immense satisfaction working alongside his closest confidantes: his friends and family. His wife, Jenn, serves as the invisible backbone of the company, meticulously managing crucial details behind the scenes. Their eldest daughter, Elex, contributes her valuable recruitment skills, while their youngest, Emilee, uses her creative skills in the marketing department. “What could be better than working with the people I love most?” Al expresses with genuine contentment. “Here, I get to do what I love alongside my best friends – my family.” 

Emilee echoes this sentiment, adding, “Witnessing Dad live out his dream is truly special. When I was younger, his work required a lot of travel, and he missed out on some things. Seeing the same passion for this line of work now shared by the whole family is truly incredible, and all thanks to him” 

Engaging with the Sedalia Community 

APS’s commitment to local engagement is evident in Al’s choice of favorite businesses and his investments in the community. Al is a huge fan of Classic Jewelry, appreciating owner Travis Hagadorn and committing to keeping business local. “We love seeing the growth of downtown Sedalia. We are excited for the things to come,” adds Chris Cooley, reflecting on the city’s potential. The team’s frequent lunches at the No. 5 restaurant below their offices are a testament to their integration into the local scene, with Al savoring the burgers and Chris praising the fried chicken. They also joke that their CFO, Mandy Root, may single-handedly be keeping No. 5 Bistro in business. We can neither confirm nor deny this, but we will say that the staff at No. 5 Bistro and Bar are BIG fans of Mandy. 

Vision for the Future 

As APS Solutions grows, adding divisions like APSS International and APS Puerto Rico Inc. they focus on bridging the skills gap in trades. “The industry is losing retirees and education isn’t pushing trade. This is a problem that continues to grow, and we encourage students close to graduation to consider joining a trades industry,” Chris notes, stressing the importance of preparing the next generation for vital industry roles. Emilee also adds, “We do a great job at helping fill the experience gap at APS. We can pair new apprentices with veteran employees in the same trade to develop quality employees.”
